Young Vreni Fankhauser was an excellent student She consistently earned top marks,
and earned the respect of both her teachers and fellow students.

Then the war began, and everyone in Switzerland was rationed.





During and just after the war, Vreni worked at the Burger Confiserie in Baden, and became a beloved friend and part of the family.
The Burger family invited her to come stay with them, in their beautiful chalet in the ski resort of Gsteig.





Once the war ended, Vreni began to travel. She had many remarkable stories of traveling
through Italy after the war, where she was able to trade fine shoes and fabrics
for a few packs of cigarettes.

At the end of the war, Vreni began to date an architect from Lausanne, and they fell quite in love
and wanted to get married, but it wasn't to be. After the death of her father, Vreni felt
it was time to turn a new leaf, and she decided to emigrate to the United States.
